ADVANTAGES OF SILVER PLATING

  • Silver-plated Copper wire is used in manufacturing insulated wire with operating temperatures up to 200°C. Silver plated copper wire would be used for hi-temperature processing where tin plated copper wire would not be suitable due to a lower melting point.
  • Excellent solderability characteristics.
  • Give low contact resistance in high frequency circuit.
  • Silver has a higher electrical conductivity than nickel or tin, It show an improved performance at higher transmission frequencies (skin effect) and would benefit electrical performance.
  • ASTM specifies minimum 40 micro-inches (1 micron) silver thickness for continuity of coating. Although higher silver thicknesses and percentages by weight are available for specialized applications.
  • Withstands higher temperatures and is not affected at sub-zero temperatures.
  • Gives aesthetically pleasing bright finish.

Due to above Silver plated copper wire is specified in manufacturing of PTFE, FEP, TEFZEL, POLYIMIDE and other insulated Aerospace and defence high temprature insulated wires & cables. It is also used in electrical screens, woven mesh, jumpers in PCB etc.

LIMITATION OF SILVER PLATING

  • Costly Compared to Nickel Plated Copper Wire/Tin Plated Copper Wire.
  • Rated Temperature up to 200°C.
  • With time silver plated copper wire conductor will tarnish in open environment. (environment effect)
  • Require controlled parameter of insulation processing, otherwise It will get tarnish.
